The log cabin block first appeared in the 1860s. It is made from light and dark strips of material arranged in a square around a red center, representing a chimney. Harriet Beecher Stowe had published the book Uncle Tom's Cabin as a newspaper serial in the early 1850s. Her depiction of life as a slave greatly influenced the anti-slavery movement. The book was banned and burned in various areas in the South.Abraham Lincoln used the log cabin theme when he ran for president. The block was especially popular in the North during the Civil War. Many log cabin quilts were given to soldiers to keep them warm.
One State/One Story: All That She Carried/Freedom Over Me is presented by Indiana Humanities in partnership with the Indiana Center for the Book and the Indiana State Library as part of Indiana Humanities' Advancing Racial Equity Project, supported by Lily Endowment.
